PRODUCT LAUNCH: 14cm Alexis Contained Extraction System, 3400mL Bag

September – Applied Medical is pleased to announce the release of the 14cm Alexis Contained Extraction System. The new Alexis CES features a smaller bag with a 3400mL volume and 14cm ring diameter. The 14cm Alexis CES joins the larger 17cm/6500mL bag to expand the Alexis CES product line. Over the past year, this innovation has enabled minimally invasive procedures worldwide by creating a contained environment for manual tissue extraction.

PRODUCT LAUNCH: Alexis Contained Extraction System

January – Meeting the needs expressed by gynecologic surgeons for a contained solution for tissue extraction, Applied Medical is pleased to introduce the Alexis Contained Extraction System. This new innovation enables minimally invasive procedures by creating a contained environment for manual morcellation. The system features a large specimen containment bag and a guard to protect the bag from sharp instrumentation. Applied’s unwavering commitment to providing innovative surgical solutions enabled the timely release of the Alexis Contained Extraction System.

EDUCATIONAL DIDACTIC: AAGL Global Congress: What’s Next in Tissue Containment?

November – Applied Medical hosted What's Next in Tissue Containment, an interactive discussion on contained solutions for morcellation at the AAGL Global Congress for Minimally Invasive Gynecology. The program featured speakers who discussed procedural developments enabling minimally invasive techniques for specimen extraction, including a preview of the Alexis Contained Extraction System.

CLINICAL STUDY HIGHLIGHT: Alexis Wound Protector/Retractor

July - Applied Medical's Alexis wound protector/retractor is evaluated in the Annals of Surgery, where a meta-analysis of six randomized, controlled trials representing 1,008 patients concludes that "[i]mpervious plastic wound protectors reduce the risk of SSI when employed in non-trauma-related gastrointestinal and biliary tract surgery. Wound protectors represent a safe and simple intervention that may reduce postoperative morbidity and mortality." Ref


CLINICAL STUDY HIGHLIGHT: Alexis Wound Protector/Retractor

June - Applied Medical's Alexis wound protector/retractor is the focus of a study in Colorectal Disease, which has found the device to be "more effective in preventing SSI in elective colorectal resections compared with conventional methods." Although the study cites colorectal procedures to have a "higher risk of developing SSI compared with other operations," with SSI being the most frequent complication of colorectal surgery, it shows that "[r]ates of SSI in colorectal patients with the ALEXIS wound retractor were comparable to rates of SSI in clean surgery." Ref


CLINICAL STUDY HIGHLIGHT: Alexis Wound Protector/Retractor

June - Applied Medical's Alexis wound protector/retractor, appearing in the Journal of Hospital Infection, is identified as a dual-role retraction device that also "may result in reduced enteric bacterial colonization of the surgical incision site during gastrointestinal surgery." The findings of the study show that "enteric organisms were cultured twice as often from the inside surface of the retractor compared with the outside surface of the retractor," so the authors conclude that "[r]educed colonization of the surgical incision site by enteric bacteria due to the use of a plastic wound retractor should result in a reduction in SSI following gastrointestinal surgery." Ref


CLINICAL STUDY HIGHLIGHT: Alexis Wound Protector/Retractor

March - Applied Medical's Alexis wound protector/retractor contributes to "virtually eliminat[ing]" superficial and deep incisional surgical site infections, as presented in a poster at the SAGES 2012 Annual Meeting. The study concludes that "laparoscopic colon and rectal resection using a clean and dirty technique, with sterile specimen extraction, re-gowning procedure and wound protection have proven to reduce incidence of wound infections, for an overall SSI rate of 5.1% compared to previously reported rates of up to 30%." PRODUCT LAUNCH: Alexis Laparoscopic System with Kii Fios First Entry

Alexis Laparoscopic System

September - Applied Medical introduces the Alexis laparoscopic system, which enables a laparoscopic approach before and after specimen retrieval. The Alexis laparoscopic system consists of the Alexis O wound protector/retractor, which provides 360° of circumferential protection and retraction, a laparoscopic cap which maintains pneumoperitoneum, and a 12x100mm Kii Fios first entry that can be used as the first stick to insufflate with only 3mm penetration into the peritoneum.

August - Applied Medical's Alexis wound protector/retractor appears in a study in Liver Transplantation, which found that "[t]he use of a wound protector significantly reduced wound complications." In a multivariate analysis of potential risk factors for wound infections in living donor partial hepatectomy, "only the use of a wound protector was found to significantly reduce the risk of wound infections in an adjusted analysis."Ref

CLINICAL STUDY HIGHLIGHT: Alexis Wound Protector/Retractor

October - Applied Medical's Alexis wound protector/retractor significantly decreases surgical site infection in open colorectal surgery, as shown in a study published in Diseases of the Colon & Rectum. Eighty-eight percent of surgeons who participated in the study adopted the Alexis wound protector/retractor as part of their "standard setup."Ref
